Carbon Revolution launches world’s first one-piece Carbon Fiber RimOctober 10, 2012 by: Deepak
Carbon Revolution has unveiled the world’s first one-piece production carbon fiber wheel, called the CR9. The Australian-based company says their product is an outcome of “nearly a decade” of research and development.
The testing on the wheel has been done jointly by the company and the premium European OEMs.
Company CEO Jake Dingle has said that the carbon wheel is 40-50 percent lighter than the conventional aluminum wheels. It has also showed that it exceeds OEM standards during testing.
“Thanks to the laws of physics, the outcome is a performance step change of breathtaking magnitude. Drivers will experience a significantly improved vehicle,” said Dingle.
Brett Gass, engineering director and founding member of Carbon Revolution said:
“Creating a composite wheel that is made entirely in one piece from continuous fibers is particularly challenging given the significant geometric complexities”, Gass explained. “We have successfully developed an architecture that optimizes the outstanding properties of continuous carbon fibers through the complex range of operational loads that are seen on a vehicle.”
Carbon Revolution says the CR9 if placed into vehicles can decrease fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions. Furthermore, it could also increase the efficiency up to 5-6 percent.
Initially, the carbon wheels will come in the sizes of 19×8.5 & 19×12 and have been designed to fit on Porsche’s 911.
