Vintage Bike: Gnome et Rhône MotorcycleJuly 30, 2012 by: Rituraj Mishra
Gnome et Rhône, more prominent in context of Vintage aviation was one of the major producer of French aircraft engine and of the unknown facts about the company is that they were involved in making bicycled in the period of 1920 to 1950. Under license from the British company ABC, they built around 3,000 motorcycles during the period of 1920 to 1924, which is a very big number when those times are taken into account.
An official distributor of the ABC, a pilot and an engineer, Barthelemey created this exquisite piece of motorcycle in 1922. He worked and refined the carburetion system completely, increasing the capacity to 500cc. Even though he left the gearbox untouched, he added an oil cooler and oil filter.
The story gets interesting here, as the motorcycle was lost and was not seen for a long time, until its current owner found it in a junk shop and traced its history back.
