New Apple iPhone 5 likely to have smaller connector for carsJuly 28, 2012 by: Rituraj Mishra
If one day you have to change your car, because it is not compatible with your iPhone or iPod then that would be a remarkable one in the history of mankind. As we know there is no scarcity of completely whacky people who need just a reason to something crazy, this might be a possibility in the near future.
After BMW flagged the trend of offering integration between the car and iPod, every other car has been doing that and people have accepted it in a very nice way. It allows them to access their music using car’s audio control and that is like dreams come true for a driver. Till date a 30-pin connector was in use for the integration but it is being heard that a smaller 19-pin connector is about to come for the coming iPhone 5.
Well that means, some of the cars won’t be able to integrate the loved by all iPhone anymore, but many of the cars such as those from Honda, BMW and Ford make use of a standard USB to connect to iPhone’s white cable and hence should be able to find a way around for the new connector. Even if they do find the workaround it will depend on how much Apple can re-engineer the interface to decode from the new phone and connector.
Ford sync software update will do it for the car, while BMW will have to wait for a new snap-in dock designed specifically for iPhone5. Kia, Hyundai, Audi, and Volkswagen use dedicated iPhone which is specific to their cars and hence they will have to release new adapter cable with the new 19-pin connector.
For cars that are stuck with the 30-pin connector module, like Nissan Juke, will need some more innovation in the form of a 30-pin-to-19-pin adapter module. Of course all these solutiosn will take time, but Bluetooth is there meanwhile for streaming audio. It will be useless if Apple again comes up with some over smart engineering, else it should be fine. Yes, car’ s stereo will lose the control, but you got to give it somewhere and if nothing works don’t buy the new phone, stick with the old and compatible one. But as I said, crazies are very easy to find, we can easily hear a news wherein someone changed his car to use iPhone 5.
