Bat: New Aircraft added to Batman’s fleet [Video]July 25, 2012 by: Nishant Panwar
Batman has got a new machine added to his fleet and this time it’s a “bat”. All the batman fan’s out there must have surely seen the fleet of incredible vehicles Batman has. But with the release of – “The Dark Knight Rises”, his fleet gets an addition.
This addition is a plane called – “Bat.”
“We always get into a film by designing the vehicle,” production designer Nathan Crowley says.
Nolan wanted Batman to add an aircraft to his fleet for “The Dark Knight Rises”. “I like jump jets and Chris likes the Osprey,” Crowley says. “So we said, okay, let’s try and mix the two and make the craft look like the Batmobile.”
Nolan usually prefers and relies more on practical models rather than the visual effects in his movies for instance the prototype military model was a real one.
Cowley started sketching the rough idea and then building a 14-inch model of the aircraft. After five models, Crowley had the final version of the Bat. “We came up with the idea that maybe the rotors are on the underside, which physically probably makes no sense,” he says. “The jump jets are on the front so you can try and guide yourself. And then the whole main body is flaps to exhaust the propellers and the jump jet so you could try and hover. If you combine the F-35B swiveling nozzles, Harrier jump jets, and Osprey rotors, that’s kind of what we’ve done.”
And with Chris Corbould, the special effects coordinator the next step of this model to get a real look was simply amazing and astonishing. Well what he did with it is simply his own masterpiece but all I can tell you is that he built 2 versions of 28-foot-long and 17-foot-wide version of the Bat that weighed more than 1.5 ton and that was what he made to fly in the air.
Well if you still haven’t seen the new Batman movie then you surely don’t want to miss this amazing aircraft and if you have seen it then this is what it took to create such a marvelous beast.
