College students in Virginia to convert 1939 Pontiac into EVJune 22, 2012 by: Rituraj Mishra
While most of us would like to go, write a cheque and buy an EV, some are too traditional and passionate to this. They would rather have an EV built for themselves. Yes it is true, a group of students from Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, are making their own EV. When we say making their own EV, we do not mean to say that they are making it from the scratch, but what they are doing seven more difficult and cooler.
They will be attempting to convert a 1939 Pontiac Silver Streak to run on electric power. The base car has been acquired sum of $1,500. Students are halfway done with the project and they hope to get the electric power train on road by 2014.
What these students have in mind could prove to be a great trend in the coming years. Considering that we are shown a new EV almost every day, sooner we might question, why a new EV when we can easily convert our present car into an EV. This would mean small business of converting cars into EV taking the spotlight, which would mean lesser revenues for companies that build new EV’s.
Well this is a matter that we need to worry later. But right now we have our fingers crossed over the project of these students. If they succeed, it will be a new chapter in the electric driving and many won’t believe it but it can change the course of the industry.
