McLaren MP4-12C Spider to get folding hardtopJune 4, 2012 by: Rituraj Mishra
The new McLaren MP4-12 is going to surprise you with its new folding roof mechanism. The drawings and sketches revealed before seeing it in actual are almost the same. There are three panels which get stacked over each other and then they are stored behind the seats in the two seat cabin.
As a result of the new folding roof, the car’s shape doesn’t change even if the roof is up or down. The V8 engine can be seen through a glass panel even when the roof is down. McLaren has worked tremendously hard to get everything right in case of looks.
German firm Webasto has developed the system, which also created the folding roof mechanism for McLaren’s biggest rival Ferrari 458 Spider. Use of the strong and lightweight carbon fibre ‘Monocell’ chassis makes sure that convertible version is not very difficult to make. The panels will be made of aluminum or carbon fiber if the weight has to be kept in check.
Ricardo-developed twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 will be doing the tricks in power department which gets around 592 bhp and 442 lb ft and since the roof won’t affect the weight, it should have the same 0-62mph time of 3.3 sec and a top speed of 205mph as by its coupe version.
