Report: Hiriko folding EV set for productionJanuary 26, 2012 by: Rituraj Mishra
An unusual EV with unusual everything, Hiriko EV has debuted in Brussels and with an unusual hub-mounted electric motor on each wheel. This isn’t the strangest feature yet. Hiriko uses an innovative rear suspension design that allows it to fold up, rotate the cabin vertically up resulting in requirement of fewer parking spaces.
Remember Smart for Two, Hiriko is said to take one-third of what smart for Two takes for parking and if things weren’t weird enough, steering wheel gives way to a joystick.
It will be in production by next year in Spain. The firm behind Hiriko is looking at the option of using many European and American cities at testing grounds. The firm is a collaboration of Basque Business (Spanish Govt.) and MIT media lab. Right now 20 vehicles are being built for testing purposes each with a manufacturing cost of $16,253.
Performance and price details are still under the wraps. The only thing I am concerned is the safety of passengers, no security whatsoever. Let’s see what the future holds for this alien species.
